Kismet with Kali

A play of relationships and memories, tracing the change from expectation to acceptance.

Kismet with Kali embraces the idea that life is full of contradictions — even the divine we worship are not free from them. As we navigate the expectations and responsibilities of being a mother, a daughter, or a guide, we often lose sight of our own identities.

Shruti’s work explores the shift from expectation to acceptance — not just of others, but of ourselves. It invites us to look beyond the roles we play and recognize the people we truly are. This work invites audiences into a space where myth meets memory, where Kali does not provide answers but instead opens the door to deeper questions.

As You Are

A dance-theater work centering the stories of women from South Asian diaspora communities.

As You Are is a dance-theater work centering the stories of women, particularly from South Asian diaspora communities. The piece offers an intimate look at survival, agency, healing, and sisterhood — without demanding resolution or resilience. Rooted in real narratives, it invites audiences to witness with compassion.

Performed and devised by a collective of femme dancers and musicians, As You Are examines the weight of unrealistic expectations placed on women — and the strength and solidarity that rises in response.

Community Engagement

During the making of As You Are, our collaboration with Narika Bay Area became an essential part of the process. Through workshops and movement-led healing sessions, we worked with women who had come from difficult pasts, exploring themes of resilience, transformation, and self-expression.

This collaboration, rooted in empathy and creative exploration, deeply influenced the themes and spirit of the work. In collaboration with Narika, Fremont.

As You Are — Collaborators

"It felt special to be in proximity, as we the audience became witnesses to coercion, violence, frustrations, resilience and questioning — all that the piece evokes."

— Lily Kharazi, Former Director of Special Initiatives, ACTA
